18th.Nov.2006 Fergus Rogers - R.I.P.
It is with great sadness that I must today let you know that Fergus Rogers passed away peacefully yesterday. Many of you will be aware through the NASS journal that Fergus had been diagnosed with "something nasty" (as it was described in the latest journal) - it was in fact pancreatic cancer, diagnosed days after the 30th anniversary symposium, and he commenced very aggressive treatment that week. I spoke with him last month where he was not too well and the treatment had not gone quite to plan; he was hoping to be at the AGM which is being held today in London.

Fergus was totally dedicated - to the point of passionate - to the cause and support of AS. It was in his blood in every sense, and he has been director of the society for the past 25 years during which time he has changed it beyond all recognition (membership is now over 5000 within the UK) and was the inspiration behind the foundation of ASIF, the international federation, which he chaired until very recently, in addition to being involved on the anti-TNF consultative committee for seeking NICE approval in AS. There is a whole list of other committees and associations that Fergus has been involved with to represent NASS and AS patient interests internationally.

Fergus will be a hard act to follow, though I am sure we would all like to take this opportunity to wish Jane Skerrett a very warm welcome as the new director of NASS.

A fund in memory of Fergus WWW has been set up - donations can be made via NASS.

19th.April.2003 Branch AGM
The Branch AGM will be held on Wednesday 4th.June in the Rheumatology Gym at the AOC, starting at 7:00pm. More details here.
28th.February.2003 The skittles night that we have just held raised £177.27. Fortunately the Beehive did not charge us for the use of the skittle alley and so we only had to pay for the buffet which was just over £58.00 - which still leaves us with enough to purchase a couple of new gym mats and balls.

The evening raised a few laughs and surprises, with Pauline winning the first game and then Dave Jeffery winning the cash prize when pitting his wits against Brian Strickland in a game to the death of killer, they were the last two from 20+ at the start.

Fred must surely be the winner of the raffle - he had most of the prizes (and most tickets purchased), and it seemed that his numbers were being pulled out every other time. All those who attended walked away with at least one prize thanks to the VERY suspect picking courtesy of Steve (makes the U.S. elections look innocent).

We would like to hear from anyone who has any ideas for events to raise funds for the group all ideas are very welcome anything from quiz night to a treasure hunt or the casino nights (Dave wants a Banzai night). Let me know so that we can canvass all the members.

Finally than you to those who attended and helped make the evening a success, it makes the effort feel worthwhile.

12th.February.2003 There will be no hydrotherapy sessions next week (19-02-03) due to routine maintenance and cleaning etc. - the gym session will be as normal. Things should be back to normal the following week
7th.February.2003 A fund-raising (and fun-having of course) Skittles Night will be held on 27th.Feb at "The Beehive", Wellington Hill West - 7:00pm till closing. There will be a raffle, with prizes including
  • a set of chef's knives c/w case worth over £250.00
  • a photographic portrait session
  • wines & spirits
Tickets £5 each available from Phil Street Lbipp (secretary).
